Introduction to a Traveller

Hi, my name is Kaitlin Manis and this is my Mythology and Folklore blog. I am a senior majoring in journalism and minoring in International Studies.
I love writing, travelling, and photography. I went to Italy when I was a sophomore in high school, and I would love to go back there someday. I would also like to go to France, England, and Spain in the future.
My favorite movies are The Dark Knight, The Devil Wears Prada, and 10 Things I Hate About You. The best movie that I saw recently was Burnt, with Bradley Cooper. My favorite types of TV shows are reality TV shows and cooking shows (basically anything on Bravo or the Food Network).
My favorite music genre is alternative or singer/songwriter. My favorite bands/artists are Coldplay, Two Door Cinema Club, The Killers, Death Cab for Cutie, Lewis Watson, and Joe Brooks. I love going to concert with my dad and sisters because we all share the same music tastes (my mom only likes country music). I absolutely hate country music.
I am graduating in December and am hoping to find a job in Dallas that involves event planning or communications of some sort. My family is from the Dallas area so I would like to stay in that area since I have a really close relationship with them.
The only pet I have ever owned was a fish, which unfortunately passed away. However, I would like to have two cats when I graduate.
My favorite places to visit are Albuquerque, New Mexico, New York City, and Destin, Florida (or Santa Rosa Beach, 30A, or Rosemary Beach. They are all in the same area). I love exploring new and old places, so I enjoy going to these places at least once a year.

My favorite food of all time is pizza. My favorite drink is chocolate milk. I pretty much eat like a five year old on a daily basis. I am not a great cook but I am an excellent baker. I used to want to have my own Food Network show when I was in elementary school.
As I mentioned earlier, my hobbies include writing, travelling, and photography. I also love going to the movies and taking naps.

Well, that’s a little bit about me. I’m excited to get to know more people in this class throughout this semester!

  1. Hi Kaitlin,

Wow it seems like we have lots in common, from the same minor to an equal obsession with pizza! My roommate is actually from New York so I have visited there every year and I fall more in love each time I go. Not to mention, the pizza is divine. What is your favorite cooking show? I have to admit I am partial to anything with Gordon Ramsey but also any baking show. Like I said in my other post, I cannot wait to have more discussions with you over the course of the semester!

  2. Hi, Kaitlin! I have a weird story about my little brother and a pet fish. When my brother was about two or three years old, I think, I came home from school to find him sitting in my room. He was sitting in a pile of water, with my fish in his hands. He proceeded to try to eat my goldfish…My goldfish died but he was a good fish. Also Seaside (off 30A) was my favorite place that I talked about in my favorite places post.

  3. I wish we could all go traveling for real in this class, Kaitlin... but if you don't mind traveling by way of stories and the imagination, you can travel to France and England and Spain this semester! And if there is a story destination that really calls to you, you could make it your project too. This can be a fun class for International Studies because learning about a country's stories can lead in all kinds of directions, sometimes totally unexpected. I hope you will have fun with it! :-)

  4. Hi Kaitlin!:) I also love traveling! I would love to spend a significant chunk of time in the Alps some day. Did you have a favorite part about Italy? It sounds like a dangerous place to me… gelato on every block! That is simply asking for trouble.
You’re graduating after this semester? That’s so exciting! Congratulations, and good luck out there☺.

  5. Hi Kaitlin, so after reading your introduction post I have realized that we are eerily similar. I too am a senior in the journalism school who is graduating in December. I also have a deep love of traveling and have been fortunate enough to travel to many places like England, New York, Costa Rica, Haiti, France, and many other places. If you ever get the chance to go to London, you should go, it's my favorite place in the world.

You also have a killer taste in music, Coldplay and Lewis Watson are also some of my favorites. I got to see Coldplay for the second time this past week when they were in Oklahoma, I hope you got to go it was a great concert. If you know of any artists I should look up, please let me know. Looking forward to reading more of your posts!

  6. It’s always fun to stumble across another Gaylord student! I’m a senior majoring in PW, so we come from similar realms. International Studies sounds like it would be a genuinely interesting minor—especially for someone as into traveling as you are. I can’t cook at all (I ruined our microwave for weeks with an Easy Mac incident once, which I’ll apparently never live down with my family), but I love the show Chopped a ridiculous amount.

Also, I’m totally with you—chocolate milk is possibly the best thing in this world, and country music is almost definitely the worst.

  7. I loveee me some Food Network, I’m so obsessed with those cooking shows. It’s so strange to because I lack the talent to even cook pork chops correctly…and well… spaghetti (SO MUCH SHAME!). If I ever become a housewife I’m going to be awful! I mean…just horrifying! You have really great music tastes. My own taste of music varies greatly, partially because each person likes something different. My sister likes Hip-Hop and R&B, my brother likes Heavy Metal and well that screaming music (forgot what it’s called) my dad likes Country and Gospel, my mother likes oldies and Gospel, then my other brother likes alternative rock (woo big family). So, I kind of dabble my likes in everything but I seem to be most drawn too Adult Alternative and Indie/Folk. I’m so spazzy, I need anything that can mellow me out.
P.s. Whatever made me think making tacos at almost 10 o’clock at night was a good idea, is nuts…I’m starved!

  8. I love all the different hobbies you have! And traveling is like top on my bucket list! I had the opportunity to go to France when I was younger it was amazing...I don't remember a lot of it. But of what I do it was awesome. So since you like god network do you like to cook? Or do you just like watching them make food/ what ever else happens on food network haha. You seem like you have a set plan after graduation. I wish I did. Can't wait to see how the rest of your blog turns out this semester!

  9. Hi Kaitlin. Loved reading your introduction. It definitely seems that you are a fun loving person and I can relate to the desire to travel. I have never been to Europe, but have always wanted to go. Love the food network, unwrapped is one of my favorite shows. I bet you would love HGTV, I watched that so much last year. I hope everything works out for you in the future and that you have an opportunity to work in Dallas. Good luck with your last semester and have fun!

  10. Hello Kaitlin, it is nice to meet you. I loved reading about you, although I have to say I felt bad that you have never really had a pet. I have three dogs. I don't know what I would do without them. Unfortunately, I am allergic to cats, but honestly I never have cared for them. My best friend is a cat person and her cats act crazy sometimes. One time I slept at her house and the cats were fighting and trying to climb the door frames. The Devil Wears Prada is a fantastic movie. I love all types of music, even country. As long as I can understand the words, I usually like it. Now as far as pizza, we are on the same page. Hands down, pizza is my favorite food. My kids actually get tired of eating pizza because I always order it for dinner. Notice I said I order it. Like you I do not claim to be a cook of any sorts, but I order well so it is okay. I am looking forward to reading some of your writing.

  11. Nice to meet you Kaitlin!

Like you I also love reality and cooking shows! My absolute favorite show is Big Brother though, do you watch it?

As for cooking shows I really like Chopped, and the Food Network is my roommate and I’s default channel to watch. I also recently got into the Great British Baking Show on netflix. I definitely recommend it if you haven’t seen it already!

And I agree that country music is the worst, I can’t stand it. But naps are the best!

  12. Hey Kaitlin!
Cooking shows are one of my favorites. I babysit basically everyday when I am not in class and I constantly have either TLC or The Food Network on in the background all day long. I love Florida, Seaside/30A/Rosemary Beach are all beautiful and are a great place to travel with the family. Like you, I would love to be able to go back home (to Fort Worth for me) after I graduate, but I will have to take wherever I get a job. I look forward to reading your stories!

  13. Hey Kaitlin! Your introduction was fun to read. I think we have a lot in common! I agree that Food Network is one of the best things to watch, although I'm not good at cooking or baking! I think that's why it's so fun to watch other people do it. I also love all of the movies you mentioned, especially the dark knight. I'm guessing you must be a pretty big Heath Ledger fan. Death Cab for Cutie is one of my all time favorite bands. My best friend and I try to see them at least once a year. I'm looking forward to reading your stories!

  14. So nice to meet you! New York is also one of my favorite places to visit and I have been five times. It never gets old. England is the place I would most love to visit since I studied English history. 10 Things I Hate About You is also one of my favorite movies. I feel I could watch it everyday, although I'm sure t would eventually get old I just love it. You have excellent taste in movies. I love all of your favorites.

  15. Hi Caitlyn! I have the same interest with you on taking naps and going to the movies. It seems like you have a good list of places you want to visit. I hope you find a job in Dallas that allows to visit those places. I give you early congratulation on your graduation this December. Enjoy your last semester at OU!

  16. Hi, Kaitlin!

It is awesome how you went to Italy during your sophomore in high school. My parents would be worried and discourage me to go to an unfamiliar place alone as a teenager.

I like watching cooking shows too! Currently, I am watching a Halloween Wars show with my roommate. The creations are so grotesque and scary-looking. It is amazing to see how they make those fascinating pieces.

Anyway, good luck with your last semester of school!

  17. Kaitlin,

I also enjoyed Italy, but I think Germany/Austria are my favorite European countries. I also agree about The Dark Knight being one of my favorite movies, I never skip it when I see it on TV.

Thanks so much for sharing. I wish you good luck with finishing this rest of this semester and with graduation.

  18. Kaitlin!! I didn't know you were in this class! I think your choice of movie favorites are awesomely diverse!! Is the Dark Knight the only superhero movie you enjoy? I didn't know you were graduating in December! It seems like Julie's class was only yesterday! I hope the job search is going well and I can't wait to see where you end up!!

  19. Hi Kaitlin,

I really like your tastes in music. Though, honestly I am not a huge fan of Death Cab for Cutie. A few years ago, my friend dragged me along to one of their concerts and I had to concede that my dislike for them had no real foundation. I think it is so great that you want to move back home after you graduate because you are close to your family.

  20. I share your love of traveling. Two summers ago, I went to Spain, France, Switzerland, England and Italy. It was the craziest summer of my life, but the memories will literally last me forever! So I say, if you are wanting to visit those places, go get after it!! We also seem to have similar taste in music. I love Two Door Cinema Club, the Killers and the Strokes. The biggest thing we have in common is that I also HATE country music. My immediate family are the only ones in my family that live in Oklahoma, so I feel like I don't really fit in with this whole "Southern" culture/music.

  21. Hi Kaitlin! I am from the Dallas area too! You have an awesome taste in music. I wish my dad was cool enough to go to concerts with me. I used to listen to Mylo Xyloto from Coldplay every single day in high school. I seriously love them and their concerts! Congrats on graduating in December, that is so exciting!

  22. HI Kaitlin, You should definitely go to England. I loved it so much, the accent is truly amazing. I could just listen to them talk for days. I also have been to Paris and Barcelona. Barcelona is so beautiful and the Mediterranean sea is breath taking. The beach there is topless so be aware if you go there in the future. Also, the gelato there was AMAZING. I am going on a european voyage this summer so traveling is a common interest we hold. I am also graduating in December, GOOD LUCK!

  23. Hey Kaitlin,
I would love to travel to Italy and France one day. I bet Italy was so much fun. I love traveling although I haven’t gone anywhere out of the country. I plan on going after I graduate so hopefully it all works out! I also love the movie, The Devil Wears Prada. I can watch it over and over again.

  24. You are almost to Graduation! How does it feel? I think it is awesome that you want to be an event coordinator or planner. I had fish at one point in time in my life. We don't have them anymore however. What do you want to name your cats? I have one in my hometown who's name is SassaFrass but she is more of my moms cat.

  25. Hey Kaitlin, I am also a big traveller. I never get tired of travelling and discovering new countries and new cultures. If I can suggest you a city to visit, it is definitely Dubai! I can guarantee you that you will love it. France also is a great country, I have been in almost every major city in France and it has always been fantastic.

  26. Hi Kaitlin!
I also love photography! Its one of the hobbies I do whenever I have time! Baking is another one of my hobbies! When I was little I wanted to open up a cupcake bakery but its not practical to do something for a living that you can do for fun! Your taste in music is exactly like mine! The Killers are one of my favorite bands! Along with Matchbox Twenty, Fountains of Wayne, and Maroon 5!
